The Derbyshire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) is held and maintained by the County Council. It contains information on all archaeological discoveries in the County including that part falling within the Peak National Park.
It covers a very wide range of information ranging from the earliest known traces of human ancestoral activity in the County - some 600,000 years ago - to sites created as part of Britain's defences in World War II.
Much of this information is held on a computer database. There are also a large number of documents held as part of the SMR.
The SMR plays an important role in supporting the specialist archaeological advice provided to the County Council. Requests for information are also received from a large number of organisations and individuals outside of the County Council. Searches relating to specific topics, periods or locations are usually undertaken, in the first instance, by County Council staff.
Should you wish to obtain information from the SMR you should contact
Gill Stroud, Environment & Countryside, Derbyshire County Council, County Hall, Matlock Telephone 580000 extension 3357 email: gill.stroud@derbyshire.gov.uk.
It usually assists the search if you supply a map showing the area in which you are interested, or supply a reasonably accurate grid reference.
